Study of bubble growth in water pool boiling through synchronized, infrared thermometry and high-speed video

چکیده
High-speed video and infrared thermometry were used to obtain timeand space-resolved information on bubble nucleation and heat transfer in pool boiling of water. The bubble departure diameter and frequency, growth and wait times, and nucleation site density were directly measured for a thin, electrically-heated, indium-tin-oxide surface, laid on a sapphire substrate. These data are very valuable for validation of two-phase flow and heat transfer models, including computational fluid dynamics with interface tracking methods. Here, detailed experimental bubble-growth data from individual nucleation sites were used to evaluate simple, commonly-used, but poorly-validated, bubble-growth and nucleate-boiling heat-transfer models. The agreement between the data and the models was found to be reasonably good. Also, the heat flux partitioning model, to which our data on nucleation site density, bubble departure diameter and frequency were directly fed, suggests that transient conduction following bubble departure is the dominant contribution to nucleate boiling heat transfer.

Nucleation, growth and detachment of steam bubbles during nucleate boiling of a water pool at atmospheric pressure is experimentally investigated using a combination of synchronized high-speed video (HSV), infrared (IR) thermography and particle image velocimetry (PIV). The heater is a thin (<1 m), horizontal (20×10 mm 2 ), resistively-heated, indium-tin-oxide (ITO) film, vacuum-deposited on a...
متن کاملUse of Synchronized , Infrared Thermometry and High - Speed Video for Generation of Space - and Time - Resolved High - Quality Data on Boiling Heat Transfer
Boiling heat transfer is a key thermal limit in nuclear systems. However, for decades, its modeling has relied on speculative hypotheses and a good dose of empiricism. As researchers now start to develop more mechanistic models, the need for high-quality high-resolution data on the bubble nucleation and growth cycle is increasing. Specifically, nucleation site density, bubble departure diameter...

Infrared thermometry was used to obtain first-of-a-kind, time- and space-resolved data for pool boiling phenomena in water-based nanofluids with diamond and silica nanoparticles at low concentration (<0.1 vol.%). In addition to macroscopic parameters like the average heat transfer coefficient and critical heat flux [CHF] value, more fundamental parameters such as the bubble departure diameter a...

Nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficients may be strongly reduced by scale formation, even for conditions where the bulk foulant concentration is well below the saturation concentration. Due to the mechanism of micro-layer evaporation, the local concentration at the heat transfer surface can be considerably increased, causing the formation of scale and changes in bubble frequency and bubble d...
